Canmore LANEWAY HOUSE

Energy Efficient ADU

A new addition adjacent to a single family home, this laneway house is a two story detached accessory dwelling unit that sits atop a new two-car garage. Designed with Passive House principles in mind, this dwelling will consume significantly less energy than the average Canadian household.

This 600 square foot laneway house was completed in Spring of 2022. On the ground level is a two-car garage, and above is the accessory dwelling unit which includes a flexible workspace/bedroom area, a small kitchenette, bicycle storage space, and an overall open layout. This energy efficient unit featurse triple glazed windows, an open plan layout, optimal solar exposure, the use of local materials, and a high efficiency mechanical system. HSS is responsible for the design, Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) assessment, and construction of this unique project.

“Climate Optimist” Shoutout

In January of 2023, Canadian author Chris Turner gave a talk about his book, “How to Be a Climate Optimist,” and gave this laneway house project and HSS a special shoutout! He recognized this project as one that addresses both the need for increased housing density and for sustainable construction practices/energy efficient design. Luckily, some of the HSS Team was in the audience to hear this recognition!
