award winning deep energy retrofit

The “Before”

Adding Insulation with a Larsen Truss

WoodWorks! Prairie Design Awards Winner

This Deep Energy Retrofit was recognized as the 2023 winner of the Residential Award at the WoodWorks! Prairie Design Awards.

This single family home underwent a renovation to improve its energy performance, street appeal and building envelope. HSS completed both the design and construction of the retrofit, giving the wonderful clients an extremely energy efficient mountain home designed with Passive House strategies that they can enjoy for years to come. Take a look at the ‘Final’ and ‘Progress’ photos to see the exciting process unfold.

Adding continuous external insulation to the existing building using a Larsen Truss system and replacing the windows with high performance models.

A new deep energy efficient retrofit in Canmore, Alberta!

Completed in the Summer of 2022, this 2479 square foot, two-story house boasts a new highly efficient building envelope. It includes a Larsen truss system with ample insulation that will significantly reduce heat loss and thermal bridging as well as bring the building envelope R-value up to a grand total of R-57. The existing gas connection was removed, and a new geothermal system installed. This deep well geothermal system covers all heating, cooling, and domestic hot water demand. A new entry mud room was added, clad in local materials. All existing windows were replaced with some of the highest rated Passive House certified windows that exist, and many have new expanded openings.
