Prefabricated Exterior Energy Retrofit (PEER) GBTN23 Initiative

This project currently in progress is part of the GBTN23 initiative in Canmore, which involves prefabricating low-embodied carbon, wood fiber-based retrofit panels. This project demonstrates innovative, panelized exterior energy retrofits (PEER) using natural, low-carbon wood fiber insulation.

By addressing key industry barriers such as high upfront costs and a lack of hands-on training, the project hopes to pave the way for scalable, sustainable retrofitting across Alberta and beyond.

Innovative Energy Retrofit: Transforming a Single-Family Home with Prefabricated Panels

This single-family home is undergoing deep energy upgrades with prefabricated panels installed on the exterior. This allows residents to remain in their homes during construction, minimizing disruption while maximizing energy performance.

The project not only upgrades aging structures but also showcases the potential for beautiful, efficient, and climate-resilient buildings through modern design and smart construction techniques.

Wood Fibre Prefabricated Exterior Energy Retrofits: Addressing Operational and Embodied Carbon Emissions in the Built Environment

The PEER system used to retrofit this project has been shortlisted in the Emerging Solutions category at the 35th Annual Emerald Awards for Environmental Excellence.

By prioritizing retrofits over demolition and rebuilding, and by using renewable, lower-impact materials, this innovative approach helps reduce both operational energy consumption and the embodied carbon associated with construction.
